Best of Baja Kiteboarding In Baja North and South
Countless gringos make the pilgrimage to Baja kiteboarding each year. The windy season typically runs from November through March coinciding with many of us trying to escape the winter cold.
Baja California Sur (South)
The consistent wind, warm water in the sea of Cortes of Baja California Sur offers a great getaway for kiters seeking a good swell and windy conditions that are also suitable for beginners. Two popular destinations are La Ventana and Los Barilles.
Both of these Baja kiteboarding destinations experience El Norte winds during the winter months creating side shore conditions that peak with at least one extremely windy day during the storm. Light winds occur between these storms and are often too light to ride. There is less wind in Los Barriles than
La Ventana kiteboarding
but the surf is bigger and its closer to Cabo than La Paz - both of which have flights from the US and Canada.
Los Barriles is located half way between La Paz and Cabo San Lucas. It is a little more established for tourists and built up.
La Ventana
is very rustic. The amenities are limited, making it a nice place to chill out.
For a day trip you can hit the Pacfic Coast at Punta Conejo. It's a couple hours drive and has great surf, and generally onshore wind. Keep going up the coast and you hit other good surf spots such as Punta Abreojos. The wind here is side-off so only for the brave, experienced and those with friends to help out in case something goes amiss.
Baja California Norte (North)
Travel to the north part of the peninsula where the Pacific Coast action gets hardcore. Punta San Carlos is one of the most favourites spots. It's off the beaten track and not too close to amenities. It will take you about a day of driving from Los Angeles driving to San Carlos. The waves here are beautiful and there is a special weather system that creates wind 12 months of the year. Again, this is a super advanced spot with a challenging launch and offshore winds.
Other spots on the Baja kiteboarding coast are the beach at San Quinton to the North of San Carlos, in front of the La Pinta Hotel. Here there is a large beach, good wind, side shore wind and medium-sized waves.
To the South of San Carlos and closer to Punta Abreojos, you will find nice waves and side shore winds, more friendly for all, at Santa Rosalita.
