Florida Kiteboarding Means
Endless Coastline and Variety

In Florida kiteboarding means countless possibilities. Both coasts (east and west) have numerous kitesurfing launches. To the south, in the Florida keys you will find warm sheltered water. In the north gulf coast you will find a number of sandy launches scattered amongst small towns. These spots are less populated so you might find a launch all to yourself.

Shannon Best and Dimitri Maramenides: Kitesurfing in Florida...

Two different water bodies meet here causing the variety of wind conditions. In Florida, kiteboarding can be year-round as much of the strongest wind arrives in the colder months from Oct-April. Lighter thermals normally blow from May through September. These are less predictable. Dangerous squalls can occur in the warmer months as well so always check the conditions before going out. Typically the wind varies so check daily for changes. A brush up lesson is always good for newbie kiters especially when new to an area.

Mid to higher range sized kites are best bets if you are bringing kiteboarding gear.

If you live in Florida you will probably never get to all of the best Florida kitesurfing locations. The coastline is endless as are the kitesurfing launch possibilities. It’s not a bad place to settle down if you can live in the US and want to kite year round without jumping on a plane. Variety definitely sums up Florida kiteboarding.

We will focus on Tampa kiteboarding and Miami kiteboarding but there are many other places to visit once familiar with this state. The Florida kite surfing association has incredible amounts of detailed information on each specific area. If you can sort through it all, you are in business. Both Tampa Bay and Miami are populated areas but the kitesurfing is excellent and a number of instructors exist. I recommend branching out to more isolated areas when you get to know some locals and the lay of the land.

Key West Kiting  I was in Key West 3 weeks ago. Very expensive place to be... (60$ per night for tent spot!) and pretty much everything is expensive but there is more wind ...
