With the snowkiting season now in full swing, this snowkiter being lofted any where between 100 and 300 metres into the air (1000 feet) and surviving a heavy landing, reminds us of the potential dangers of snow kiting in the mountains. Having travelled along the desert coast of Namibia and experienced the unbelievable winds, I have to mentions this speed challenge. This is ultimate speed! From Rafael one of the event organizers: The Lderitz Speed Challenge 2009 will be getting underway in less than two week and it's going to be awesome! Throughout the month of November kiteboarders will be attempting to break world speed sailing records in Lderitz, Namibia. Last year three competitors broke the 50 knot barrier. This year we're trying to break 100kph. Most of the top riders from last year are back (Alex Caizergues, Catman, Rob Douglas, Sjoukje Bredenkamp), along with a many new faces. Just got the chance to fly the Wainman Hawaii Rabbit Kite - the 9m Smoke. What a great kite! Really smooth and powerful and full of boost.
I loved the range of this kite as the wind was fairly light - but this kite flew so fast I could easily generate my own power. To jump this kite is awesome really great height and hang time but so forgiving that it really made for some gentle landings when I screwed it up. I only flew this kite for an hour or so but after just 10 minutes really felt comfortable on it. I unhooked and pulled a few raileys but in the lighter wind never got the full feel - so would like to go back on a bit more wind to really get it dialed; but for a four line with low aspect ratio it trimmed and flew very well unhooked - some kites can back fly when unhooked. The relaunch has to be mentioned - you won't believe how easy this kite relaunched - experiencing is believing. The bar looks really nicely put together - simplicity, style, safety and comfort have all gone into this bar and four line kite. More on this kite and hopefully some photos coming soon. Try one out - this kite rocks!

A stand up paddleboarder -SUP was recently taken out by a runaway jetski in Australia. For those who missed this, it's unclear on the full details, but it seems a coast guard's 'personal water craft' got the better of him as he negotiated the surf on the Gold Coast. The PWC then set off on a mission. But instead of heading for the one of the many great surf breaks it headed direct for the SUP pro named 'Dave' - mercilessly ploughing him down. Divine intervention or a freak accident we'll leave that to your take on SUP'ing. Dave did end up in hospital with a broken leg and full 'respect' for PWC's without drivers!

Well up here in Squamish we have been having some really good kitesurfing. Solid windy days - generally windier than the average, smooth 18 - 20knots we experience in perfect thermals of Squamish. It has been cranking through in the 25 to 30knots - dense sea-level winds.
Its a great time to go for those big airs! but the crashes come big too! Lately its become even more crazy - GUSTY as anything!

Here's yesterdays windgraph - is it up or down...?! Maybe Neptune out there in the Pacific is brewing up a storm - either way someones pissed about something!

This is a note from a concerned Californian kiteboarder and resident.

Due to the CA budget crisis and the failure of the CA electorate to support a solution (bond issues in the recent election), the governor has set forth a proposal to close, lock up and shutter 80 of the parks in the CA State system. This includes Waddell Creek (Ano Nuevo), Half Moon Bay, Tomales Bay, Sonoma Coast, Pismo etc etc and others in the SF Bay area and across the state. Next Tuesday, June 2, the Legislatures Budget Conference Committee will consider this proposal. State park and coastal advocates need to make their voices heard RIGHT NOW. Your contact to your legislators is critical. Tell your CA State representatives and the Governor that closing the CA State Parks is unacceptable. Political Side-note: People we need to pay (TAXES) to play. No revenue for state means no services for residents of the state. I recommend repeal of Prop 13 and support other measures to fund the state budget.
